Abstract: This study evaluates the effects of streaming on the accademic progress of the child and his home environment. Chapter 1 introduces the study and describes the design of the research. Chapter 2 examines the family backgrounds of pupils from 2 aspects: (a) social class and the economic position of the families; (b) educational level of the families. Chapter ·3 considers parental attitudes to primary education. Factors considered include: (a) parental opinion of the school; (b) their interest in child upbringing; (c) expectations and aspirations for their children; (d) their priorities for their money. Each of these factors are related to the child's stream and the social class status of the father. Chapter 4 analysis the. attitudes of pupils in the primary school. It includes: (a) pupils' attitudes towards education; (b) children's study habits; (c) their educational and occupational aspirations;·(d) pupils' friendship patterns. These points are studied according to the child's stream. Chapter 5 proposes the complete elimination of streaming from the primary school and suggests alternatives which appears very suitable and which achieves the ultimate objectives of education.
