Abstract: This dissertation will involve an in-depth study of human populations and spatial distributions in the walled cities of the Maltese Islands, these being Valletta, Floriana, Cospicua, Senglea, Vittoriosa, and Mdina. Criteria examined entail statistical information with regards the size, structure and other instrumental developments that effect the population of each respective locality. Economic, social and political factors that instigate changes with regards to population and the spatial distribution of inhabitants are also examined in this study. Through the application of raw data and the observable features of each of the localities, demographic analysis has been utilised in order to effect the numerous drastic results as to the extent by which the walled cities are currently depleting in their populations in contrast to their situation in the past fifty years. Additionally, the realities of the ageing phenomenon, outmigration, poor housing quality and amenities and the substandard conditions of living in such areas are discussed at length, as well as possible initiatives that may aid in rejuvenating the fortified towns of the Maltese Islands.
