Abstract: Hannibal Preca (1832-1901) is one of the outstanding Maltese figures who lived in the second half of the nineteenth century. His greatest merit lies in his vigorous effort to promote popular education in favour of all that is Maltese, when the social situation of the times was still quite disastrous. Preca's most humble life and his literary and linguistic contributions, almost forgotten to this day, still are and will remain beneficial to such a small nation. His influential pen, in all that concerns the analysis of his surrounding society, contributed much to the Maltese cultural life of the nineteenth century.
