Abstract: In the world of today, when every day that dawns brings with it new technology, there is an urgent need to conserve as much as possible the traditions and customs of our forefathers. Amongst these traditions are included the many games which Maltese and Gozitan children used to partake in and enjoy. It is with great nostalgia that today one rarely sees children playing these games. And it is for this reason that I feel particularly proud that I am presenting a number of them for teachers to include in their schemes of work. Play and learning are not two separate elements in a child's life; they go hand in hand, helping children to develop happily at their own rate. Keeping this reality in mind, this study was carried out with a dual purpose: Firstly, to analyse the present state of such games and their place in school life by means of quantitative research and secondly, to give a brief but detailed description of a number of them suggesting ways in which they can be included and integrated in the school syllabus. A less explicit aim of this work is to support the efforts of those who, in their various directions and walks of life, firmly believe that our national traditions can and should be perpetuated, even if this would mean changing them and adapting them to the modern way of life of our children.
