Exploring Attard : facilitating environmental education through electronic media

Abstract

The Web Site highlights sites of environmental value. Its main aim is to serve as a teaching aid for the appreciation and learning about these sites of great value. It is mainly aimed to be used by teachers at Attard Primary School, and by users who access the site through the Internet. In order to obtain the most important environmental aspects that can be learnt through this village, it was necessary to search for existing sources of information. Fieldwork was carried out through visiting of sites and interviews with people who have resided in this village for a long time and those who carry out specific jobs in this locality. The design of the Web Site comprises different aspects of the village. I divided the locality's information into five categories: Locality History, Places of Interest, Parish Church, Life Style & Services, and Local Council. One is also able to access these places through the Site Map. Feedback on the design and the educational value of this project were obtained through online comments on the site and through an evaluation by questionnaires about the CD filled in by teachers. Owing to its nature, the implementation of Attard's Web Site moves away from the structures used in traditional books or magazines, towards the strategies used in other attractive sites on-line or on a CD presentation.
