| Abstract: | As Malta has formed part of the British Empire for the last one hundred and fifty years, it may be desired to review very briefly the progress of education in the Mother Country, as, generally speaking, the progress of education in these islands has been based of that of England, though more often than not, it has been adapted to local needs and influences. The development of early education in England was not governmental. It was mainly due to the Churches and to philanthropic effort. In 1698 the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, known as the S.P.C.K., which still flourishes today, was founded, though even before this date there existed an extensive system of charity schools. |
