Abstract: This is a case study of a year five primary classroom on the use of Maltese and English as media of instruction. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to why the study and explains the choice of place (Marsaxlokk), the choice of the classroom I school and gives the timetable of the observations held. The methods used throughout the study are explained. Chapter two includes a review of the literature on bilingualism in education and describes the use of code-switching in the primary classroom, both in Malta and abroad. Chapters three and four give the results of the observations, qualitatively and quantitatively respectively. Finally, Chapter five summarizes the findings.
