Abstract: This study is an attempt to identify the difficulties encountered by Maltese students sitting for the Advance Level examination in English. It mainly focuses on paper II, Criticism, and deals with the preparation the students are exposed to. This analysis is held through past papers taken over a period of ten years, the comments from teachers teaching literary criticism, together with the examiners~ reports presented upon the publication of the results. The use of stylistics in this area is outlined with practical lessons and guidelines in the three main different genres; i.e poetry, prose and drama.
