Abstract: The main focus of this study is to notions that surround Discovery Learning its importance as a valuable educational clarify some of the plus highlighting tool. The work is divided into four main section. the first of which covers the meaning of discovery learning. where it originated from. what major proponents say about different discovery methods and some heuristic models. The second part outlines how discovery learning is implemented in the school setting. The third section deals with a critique of learning by discovery; its advantages and disadvantages; its psychological and educational limitations. followed by a comparison of the two major authorities in this field- Jerome S. Bruner and David P. Ausubel- where one sees. discovery oriented learning versus a more didactic approach. The fourth is a practical approach concerned with a task based exercise in three schools using year 4/5 classes. where each class was divided into two groups having one group exposed to active learning and the other group exposed to passive learning. with a follow-up a week later to determine which type of learning is the most suitable.
