| Abstract: | Research carried out to study to what extent Maltese pupils in primary schools (age group 10 - 11) understand Italian and English. The two private schools chosen are St. Joseph School, Blata 1-Bajda and St. Joseph School, Rabat. The two state schools chosen are Hamrun Primary 'B' and Rabat Primary 'B'. Use of a questionnaire was made to identify a favourite television programme, in Italian and in English. The text of the said programme served to identify the pupil's linguistic abilities in both languages. Results had to be analysed taking into consideration the children's age, their level of academic attainment and their social environment. A free-speaking test was also administered and analysed in both languages. |
