More beneath the mask of aggression : perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards human tendencies of aggression and/or destruction

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate attitudes towards human tendencies towards aggressive or destructive behaviours. A qualitative approach was adopted as it allows for an in-depth understanding of the personal opinions and perceptions of locals and professionals alike. Three focus groups were conducted, consisting of members of the general public, students of the University of Malta, and the University of Malta academic staff. Data was analysed thematically and yielded seven main themes, namely: distinctions in defining aggression, human aggression, dealing with aggression, perspectives on the aetiology of aggression, aggression in the media, aggression in the local context and gender differences. Responses indicated that females are seen as more perverse despite the fact that it was generally accepted that males are physically stronger, that Christianity seems to have an overall negative rather than positive effect, emphasis was given to upbringing more than any other contributing factor, however, exposure to violent media was correlated to a higher possibility of acting out in an aggressive manner overall, alongside many other factors through-out this research.
