| Abstract: | The aim of this study is to investigate various issues concerning science teaching in Year 3 state and private school classes. The information was obtained from questionnaires distributed to Year 3 teachers. Other data was obtained through class observations, discussions with teachers and interviews held with Heads and parents. These helped in supporting the responses given in the questionnaires and adding other relevant information. From this study it was found that the majority of the teachers dedicate a period of 45 minutes · weekly to science teaching. However, from the qualitative research it was shown, that lack of scientific knowledge is one of the main factors which is keeping back private school teachers from carrying out science more regularly in Year 3 classes. It was also found that lack of apparatus and other resources is evident in private schools whereas in state schools even though limited, resources are always available. Moreover, it was also shown that private school teachers prefer to integrate science across the curriculum more than their state schools counterparts. It was found out that a general positive attitude towards science teaching is held by Heads, teachers and even parents. Children's attitude towards this subject is surely a positive one since the findings show that they always participate actively and enthusiastically during a science lesson. Year 3 science worksheets are a very popular resource in state schools, while they are not so commonly used in private schools. However, class observations carried out, show that Year 3 teachers generally base the science lesson on the activities presented in these worksheets. Providing adequate training to teachers is essential especially on scientific content and methodology. Moreover, provision of resources, help and support to teachers in both state and private schools is needed and appropriate improvements to science worksheets are necessary. All these will surely contribute in enhancing more effective science teaching. |
