Abstract: The objective of this study is to demonstrate that English can be taught using a task-based approach, an unconventional method which is very different from the traditional approaches generally used. A number of different approaches are first described and these help to highlight the extent to which a task-based methodology differs from traditional approaches. We then go on to provide an explanation of the design of the tasks which are included in this dissertation. Apart from theory therefore we also set out to show how tasks can be done in the classroom. In this way we wish to show that the teaching of the English language can be conducted quite differently from the way it has been done so far and at the same time show that satisfactory results can be obtained.
