Abstract

This study forms part of a series of volumes dedicated to the Maltese Literature for Children. This work is exclusively original. The aim of this national survey carried out in the form of a questionnaire and interviews was to investigate how much and to what extent are Maltese children involved in the reading habits of Maltese literary books specially published for children. These surveys were systematically carried out with children of seven to eleven years of age in twenty one Government primary schools in Malta and Gozo. Interviews were later carried out with children, teachers, authors o:f children's literature, librarians and publishers of Children's books in Maltese. Both the questionnaire and interviews were carried out during a period of two years from 1980-81 to 1981-82. In chapters 3 and 41 the questionnaire and the interviews were thoroughly analysed. Finally comments and suggestions were drawn up to give a wider perspective of the whole aspect of the reading of Maltese literature by children.
