Abstract: The work involves research on the gradual development of government primary education in Malta, during the years. 1946 to 1974. The work also includes the main trends of primary education in Malta between the years 1837 and 1946. The second chapter deals with early directors of education who left their mark on the educational scene, whilst Chapter 3 examines important reports on education. Chapter 4, deals with the dramatic rise in the number of primary schools in Malta, especially after the war years. Chapters 5, and 6, are also important since they deal with the organization of Primary Education during the said years, and with the development of teacher-training. The last chapter deals with recent reforms, especially with the Act of 1974 on Education.
