Abstract: This dissertation outlines the development of theory underpinning communicative language teaching, its background and what it was a reaction against. It goes on to discuss how communicative language teaching may become a reality in the classroom system providing opportunities for second language development. Concentrating on ways of providing ways for meaningful interaction the suggestions made in this section are then tested within a maltese context through classroom based research aimed at assessing the effectiveness of communicative games. An account of the procedures adopted is then presented together with an evaluation of the methodology developed. throughout this dissertation, for consistency of style, the teacher has seen referred to as "she" and the pupil as “he".
