Abstract: | This research analyses the Maltese authors' attitude to Italian words current in the Maltese language in their translations of Italian novels. Some words are left in their original form with minor changes and are 'adopted' in the maltese text (cf. 2.1.). Others are substituted, some by a word of semitic origin and others by a word of romance origin. These words have been dealt with under two sections: words that are currently used in Maltese (2.2.) and others that are rare or obsolete (2.3.). In other instances a single Italian word has been substituted by a whole phrase (2.4.). A consideration has been given also to the translation of phrases or expressions. The main focus has been made on those that have been literally translated into Maltese. These have been dealt with in section 3.6. General observations and conclusions are presented in section 3.7. followed by some suggestions for further work in the field. |
