Abstract: | This study sought to investigate children's understanding of Probability and Statistics. A Probability and Statistics test was carried out with 170 students aged 14-15+, attending a number of Maltese non-selective schools. The questions of the test were designed so as to probe understanding rather than to test whether particular methods have been adopted by the teacher. Interviews were also conducted to interpret the results of the written test. The study highlights pupils' difficulties in the drawing of simple inferences from tables and statistical diagrams (e.g. pie charts, pictograms, bar charts), in distinguishing between discrete and continuous data, in finding the probability of simple and compound events, and in computing measures of central tendency (mean, mode, median) and spread (range). The implications for teaching Probability and Statistics in the light of the pr~sent findings are discussed. |
