Computer-based resources for teaching computer hardware topics for SEC Computer Studies

Abstract

When teaching computer hardware topics at SEC level, the teacher is very often faced with teaching a large number of abstract concepts. Although in areas where the topic concerns physical hardware objects getting the actual object concerned as a main resource can minimize this, in other areas involving abstraction such an approach would be unproductive. This study has the aim to show how computer-based resources can help as a tool in the teaching of computer hardware topics in the Matsec Computer Studies syllabus. Consequently, with the teaching of computer hardware at SEC level as the focus of the study, some of the design and production techniques in the creation of such resources are described. Methodological changes that such tools necessitate are also illustrated. While considering all the currently available resources, the study shows how computer-based resources give the student the possibility to observe and experiment with hardware objects at work in the most tangible form. In creating the most effective student-centred learning environment, this dissertation presents a variety of computer-based resources, including educational games, multimedia presentations, hardware constructions, simulations, interactive multimedia databases and interactive 3D videos.
