The problem of transition from primary to secondary school

Abstract

Foreign and local research shows that the transition from the primary to the secondary school creates problems to the pupils in transition. This study seeks to gain insights into what are the problems of transition, what is the cause of these problems and what can be done to overcome them. After discussing the issues emerging from the literature, we gave an overview of the qualitative research method presented in the study. Our study mainly focused on a cohort of students in different year 6 classes, selected from different schools in Malta, who were then followed in their respective transfer schools. Our analysis was divided into two parts. In part one we studied the students' perceptions about life in the secondary school and in part two we analysed their responses when they were in their respective secondary schools. We discussed their problems and whether their aspirations and expectations were met. Our study gave us a clear indication that the pupils were not being adequately prepared for the transition. The final chapter gives an account of what is already being done in schools to help the children overcome the problems of transition. We also included some suggestions and proposals. The study concludes that a team effort, made up of parents, teachers and schools is necessary in order to help the pupils overcome the problems they might face.
