| Abstract: | In this study I investigate the values that pertain to leisure and work and their transmission in the class room - it seems as though the values which are being transmitted to Year 6 pupils nowadays are stronger in intensity although the same in quality as those that were transmitted to me when I was a Year 6 pupil. Various factors contribute to the increase in the intensity of the values transmitted. As an example, one may consider the introduction of the Junior Lyceum exam in Year 6. Work activities in the class are now valued more than leisure experiences, both by teachers and parents. Children are urged to work hard at the expense of sacrificing leisure experiences during the school day, and also after school. It is time to let our children enjoy their childhood: introducing aspects which are usually associated with leisure, like spontaneity and enjoyment in their learning experience, make it more meaningful and fun. |
