Abstract: This study is mainly divided in two sections. In the first part I carried out research among 300 Year 6 students by means of which I investigated the amount of time they spend watching programmes in Italian. Then 100 of these students were selected randomly and carried out language tests in order to analyse the effects of watching Italian television stations on their Italian language competency. The aim of the study is to determine whether television remains a powerful instrument in Malta, given that past researchers have shown that television helped young students to acquire a linguistic competence if they watched Italian television stations regularly. Hence, the results obtained were analysed in the light of findings reported by various researchers who carried out studies on Italian television in Malta. I also examined various implications of my results with regards to the teaching of Italian L2 in Malta. In fact, today it is well-known that technology and media need to have a central place in teaching as they highly motivate our young learners. So the second part of the dissertation focused on the importance of using media and other technological instruments as a teaching resource for Italian as a second language
