The school as a community : perceptions of secondary school students with emotional behavioural difficulties

Abstract

Schools are interactive sites where learning takes place. Within the school setting some students exhibit Emotional Behaviour Difficulties (EBD). International research has indicated that EBD at schools are increasing, particularly at the secondary level. In Malta, behaviour problems in schools have become a major area of concern. This study investigates the perceptions of students with EBD regarding their school environment and the functioning of their school as a community. The qualitative data obtained by in-depth interviews provides an insight of the specific areas of concern in secondary schools. This study indicates that the interaction patterns and relationships of students with EBD with teachers and peers, and perceptions of their performance at school have an important impact on their behaviour. This study also indicates that students with EBD are not experiencing a sense of belonging in class and in the school. This is attributed mainly to the negative attitudes of teachers and peers towards them. Furthermore, this study brings forward the view that parents are not active participants in their child's education. This study shows that problem behaviour is the cause of actions and reactions amongst individuals, and advocates the need for schools to function as community sites and to promote a sense of belonging to all students.
