| Abstract: | The main aim of this investigation was to study some aspects of the communicative competence of a Maltese deaf boy. The main emphasis was placed on nonverbal language competence, in particular manual signs. The data for the study were obtained mainly during controlled video-recording sessions which consisted of the boy's attempts at communicating through signs with his younger brother and sister. An analysis of the data collected constitutes the major part of the study. The nature of the signs used and their effectiveness in communication were discussed. |
