Household waste : an environmental education resource pack for secondary schools

Abstract

The dissertation attempts to infuse environmental education into the secondary school curriculum. This is achieved through the production of an interdisciplinary resource pack which focuses on the issue of household waste management. The resource pack includes a set of activities which enable students to analyse local problems on household waste management and to propose and try out practical solutions associated with these problems. The resource pack also contains a set of information sheets which provide the teacher with the necessary background knowledge to tackle the proposed activities. The various local waste management processes outlined in the pack are illustrated by accompanying video-clips. The resource pack was evaluated by teachers from five secondary schools. Their recommendations indicate the need for the development of such interdisciplinary resource material in the secondary school curriculum.
