| Abstract: | This dissertation discusses a number of philosophies, theories and interpretations of 'education', 'democracy' and 'democratic education'. The pragmatic and the liberal views of education and democracy were discussed. The study then goes on to establish what guidelines through the curriculum and the preparation of future teachers are available for Maltese primary state, church and private school teachers. A pilot study was carried out to determine whether the study was feasible or not. Following the analysis ofthis pilot study, a questionnaire was distributed to primary school teachers to analyse their understanding and practice of democratic education. The conclusions and implications arising from the findings of the questionnaire were used to present a number of recommendations. These recommendations are meant to help teachers promote certain democratic values which are considered important for the preparation of future democratic citizens. |
