Abstract: Our work consists in observing how a Maltese writing lesson is carried out in the primary schools, specifically in a year four class. In the light of a New Paradigm in the context of Maltese writing instruction, we tried to find out up to which extent this New Paradigm is spread in Maltese schools. For this purpose we formulated a checklist which includes stages of writing and our aim was to keep a record on how much time is spent for every stage in the lesson. We included a theoretical background on the model of writing-as-a-process, being the product of the New Paradigm. Our focus was on carrying out the observations in six primary schools over a long period so that the study would be based on a longitudinal spread. We chose two schools from the government sector, two from the private sector and two church schools. In our choice of schools we tried to vary so as to obtain a more detailed situation and to be able to draw some conclusions on the factor which affects the planning of the writing lesson.
