Abstract: Mgarr, Gozo, was traditionally a fishing village whose sheltered harbour is now the principal port for all ferries connecting the two islands of Malta and Gozo. The restricted site accommodates a variety of sometimes conflicting uses including road and sea transportation and sea facilities, retail and commercial development, fishing and recreational boating marinas. The volume of vehicular and passenger traffic using the site continues to grow steadily as tourist arrivals to Gozo increase; volume of goods required to meet the demands of both residents and visitors has also increased. This dissertation analyses current uses of the harbour site and also indicates conflicts. The uses of the harbour by local residents are considered in juxtaposition to its function as an island terminus. Recommendations for reducing conflict in land uses are suggested.
