Abstract: University is a complex place – if it is a place at all. What follows here is an account that explores the social and human elements of university, tracing changes in the patterns of people and learning at the University of Malta (UM). The main focus is on UM graduates with an emphasis on the period from 1800 to the present. As will be expanded upon in more detail as the chapter progresses, the data sources available to draw on are heterogeneous and certainly not consistent. For instance, in the early years, the information available makes it possible to focus mostly on students, but later, insights into resident academic staff become more substantive. In this manner, this chapter traces the shifting patterns of people and learning within the community at the University of Malta over time.
