Abstract: This dissertation studies the link between Physical Education and Holistic Education at the Primary level. In the literature review it intends to expose the theories on education of pioneers and contemporary thinkers. Holistic education is seen in relation to the National Minimum Curriculum. We have also seen the interpretations given to holism and dualism and their effect on Physical Education. It is believed that a properly executed Physical Education program develops not only the physical but also the cognitive, social and spiritual domains of the person. The study involved visits to a number of schools to observe and determine if Physical Education is being taught in a holistic way. We also carried out semi-structured interviews with the teachers of the respective classes. We have found that whilst most teachers are aware of at least one aspect of holistic education, not all can relate it to Physical Education or consciously aim to teach PE in a holistic way. Very often it happens naturally because we have found that PE in itself is a holistic subject. So if we want to implement the NMC across the curriculum, teachers and student teachers should be exposed to, and be made more aware of, the importance and benefits of holistic education. Special reference has to go to PE as it is one of the subjects which tends to be neglected where such teaching strategies are concerned.
