L-istorja ta' l-alfabeti Maltin fil-kitba bil-Malti

Abstract

The dissertation forms part of a research in the wide field of the development of the Maltese language. This survey deals with the history and development of the Maltese alphabet from texts written in the vernacular language dating back to the late 14th century up to the present day, with special reference to the Arabic influence in the Maltese language. In this study I have analysed the alphabet used by Pietru Caxaru, Gann Frangisk Abela, Agius De Soldanis, Thezan and M. A. Vassalli in their respective writings. I have also included the alphabets used in the 19th and 20th centuries, mostly found in dictionaries and Maltese textbooks used in state schools. Surely, this study brings to light the Arabic influence in our alphabet through the years.
