Abstract: San Lawrenz is a small village situated in the western part of Gozo. San Lawrenz was formerly part of the very old village of Għarb. It was erected an independent parish on 15 March 1893. This dissertation investigates the origins of the community that formed the core of San Lawrenz, referred to in earlier documents as Ta' Cangura. It proceeds to examine the development that took place from early days to recent times thus delving into the origins, growth and present state of the village. This study will also look at the social, cultural and religious aspects of the life in San Lawrenz including education, folklore, and traditions. In spite of the development and progress, at the end of the twentieth century, San Lawrenz still partly retains the traditional, rural Gozitan lifestyle.
