| Abstract: | This study aims to explore the importance play has on the sociological growth of a child, particularly Year Three children at primary level. It also investigates the various sociological aspects related to play, mainly: friends, group formation, interaction, gender issues, self-esteem, confidence, different types of play and use of toys. A sample of 18 children was observed from six different schools belonging to the state, church and private sectors. The children were requested to complete a questionnaire, which asked about their preferences on play. From the analysis of the results, it seems that children prefer to play with friends. Boys tend to prefer playing with their same sex when attending a mixed school; girls are more willing to accept playmates of the opposite sex. Nonetheless, a majority of boys claim that their best friends are boys. Games such as hide and seek are a favourite means during playtime amongst children, although half of them use toys during their play. This study illustrates that play is a tool for socialisation and if utilised effectively, it can also serve as a positive pedagogical medium. Taking all the aspects related to play into account, it is a means for children to make friends and enhance their friendships. |
