Abstract: A varied diet containing adequate energy and nutrients is essential for normal growth and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the eating habits of children between four and seven years. A sample of classes from all the main areas of the Maltese islands including State, Church and Private schools were included. The research incorporated a variety of activities held in Kindergarten and Year 1 classes, which established the childrens' food preferences. The activities consisted of handouts to be filled in by the children, a visual materials activity and a lunch box content observation of all the classes concerned. Family setting and the school environment were also focused upon. A questionnaire was given to each parent and an informal talk was held with the class ., teachers. Overall results indicated that Maltese children have a preference for sugary and fatty foods. A large number of pupils didn't consume any breakfast and most parents ignored the value of this meal. Some parents had no basic nutrition knowledge. The most popular nutrition information sources of the parents who declared to have some nutrition knowledge, were books, magazines, television, supermarket leaflets and recipe books. No · official nutrition education is taught at school at this level and not all teachers seemed interested in nutrition. All schools had school policies regardi.ng food but none promoted nutrition education. Parents and teachers lack nutrition education which is essential for effective guidance of the children towards making healthier food choices.
