Abstract: Throughout this dissertation, I intend to consider the importance of including the cultural aspect in the teaching of German as a foreign language in Malta. Intercultural communication should always be at the centre of each lesson - the teacher should lead the pupils from the known the Maltese culture - to the unknown - the German culture. Thus the pupils would be able to compare and contrast both cultures. After conducting a survey amongst teachers of German in our Junior Lyceums using Zick Zack 1a & 1b - Forms 1 and 2, I shall go on to present some material about Maltese culture to supplement/substitute the predominantly British background of the course book. To conclude my dissertation, I shall discuss extra-curricular activities which can help us in promoting further intercultural communication.
