Abstract: This dissertation outlines the development of English as a global language, and considers the rise of the EFL industry in Malta. Also outlined is the development of the various methodologies, and how they were underpinned by the various theories of language and language learning, informed by trends in behaviourist and cognitive views of psychology. The related literature is reviewed, and a description of Communicative Language Teaching is given. The nature of methodology is duly defined, differentiating between teachers as classroom managers and operators. This qualitative study concentrates on the theoretical approach to listening and speaking skills, and compares and contrasts this with the reality of the EFL classroom situation in Malta. The writer gives an analysis on the various aspects of classroom methodology observed, and interprets teachers' views of Communicative Language Teaching vis-a'-vis their classroom practice.
