Abstract: This study was intended to investigate whether the chemistry SEC syllabus is adequately preparing students to pursue further studies in A-level chemistry. Examination of syllabi helped to identify areas where A-level chemistry builds on previous knowledge and skills acquired at SEC level. The investigation considered students' views by means of questionnaires distributed to 400 first and second year A-level chemistry students, together with post-secondary teachers' views by means of semi-structured interviews. Data obtained through the questionnaires were analysed by gender, type of school and year of study. Important findings emerged from the analysis of data obtained from both teachers and students. Both teachers and students were aware of a significant gap in the transition between SEC level and A-level chemistry, the most evident being that in organic chemistry. Lack of practical preparation and mathematical skills at SEC level also proved to be areas which students and teachers feel may be resulting in a steep learning curve between the two levels. These findings have implications for post-secondary chemistry teaching, suggesting that a review of syllabi is needed in some areas.
