| Abstract: | This is a study about the teaching of the Maltese Language to backward children in the first three years of Primary School. The study may be divided in two parts: the first part being theoretical and the second practical. In the first part I endeavoured to define the backward child and the various factors, whether innate or environmental, that may contribute to this state, with special emphasis on the reading and writing of Maltese. In the second part, I carried our various tests, both oral and written to backward children, belonging to three schools in Malta and to backward ones attending schools in Gozo. Some specimen of the children's work of the first, second and third year are included in the Appendix. I have also included in the study the opinions of some teachers about backward pupils and the methods they apply to teach them. I made it a point to give my own opinion about the matter. In the last part of the study I put forward practical suggestions which, in my opinion, may help to keep down the number of backward children. Besides I included some word games which, I think, are both instructional and entertaining. |
