Abstract: This analysis of errors attempts to illustrate the main orthographic deviances in an unseen dictation passage encountered by Maltese students, who are preparing for their G. C. E. Ordinary Level Examinations. Consequently, the errors which have been pointed out, have been classified and evaluated typologically and according to frequency. Subsequently, possible causes to such deviances have been suggested. Furthermore, recommendations as to how certain teaching programmes could be improvised and developed in order to diminish the recurrence of certain deviances, have been made in light of the deviances themselves. This study has revealed that Maltese students tend to avail themselves of the almost unique opportunity to watch and listen to Italian programmes on television. Furthermore it is amazing that one comes across so many orthographic deviances on an island where Italian is considered as the second foreign language after English.
