| Abstract: | Since Malta forms part of the European Union (EU), there are policies which have to be implemented accordingly. The EU has developed an Energy Union which provides the Member States with policies which aims to improve their sustainability. For 2020, Malta had to reach a target of 10% of the final energy composition from renewables, however, Malta did not reach this target, therefore, had to option to dependent on the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). For 2030, the EU has developed a long-term plan which includes an energy package for its Member States ‘Clean Energy for all Europeans’. The EU has also given an opportunity for its Member States to adapt these strategies into their own situation and circumstances considering that every Member States has different opportunities and natural resources. By analysing this energy package together with obtaining information from policy makers who are entities responsible for specific energy sectors, this would identify what improvements and strategies Malta should adapt to reach the 2030 target for the EU, while taking into consideration the SWOT analysis for identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the energy sector in Malta. |
