Abstract: | Jameson ( 1991) has argued that. .. . . . the last few years have been marked by an inverted sense of milleniarism in which premonitions of the future, catastrophic or redemptive, have been replaced by a sense of the end of this or that. This sense of an end is also bringing about the end of communitarianism which is being replaced by individualism. In this dissertation I argue that this new mode of thinking is a retrograde step for social life, and in order to combat this wave of individualism, I shall propose Community Education as a remedy for this ill. I contend that such an education not only builds and strengthens community spirit, but it also helps to develop fully the potentials of individuals and that finally it will also be of benefit to the larger community (i.e. the nation). To prove my assertions I am proposing that such a project be tried at San Gwann and for this reason I have conducted a piece of empirical research that endeavours to establish whether, and how far, the project could be actuated. Being a new locality whose main problem is the lack of a community spirit, San Gwann provides fertile ground for the idea of starting a Community Centre. |
