Abstract: Looking through history one can apprehend that, economically speaking, Malta prospered in times of War and became poor in times of peace. Infact people made fortunes out of war. This happened also in the case of the second World War. Malta entered into a fairly good period. The demands for Malta's service brought with it more troops, more airmen and more construction work, such as new airfields. Because of the conscription there was full employment and the problem of balance of payment did not exist. The war situation caused importation to reduce and thus people saved more since they could not buy anything they fancied owing to great scarcity of products. But on the other hand War induced inflation. The demand was great, but the supply was inadequate, consequently prices rose. Farmers and business people prospered while those who could not afford lead a miserable life. Black market was oftentimes carried out by business people. This made matters worse.
