Abstract: This thesis is a survey on teachers' views regarding the teaching of Social Studies in Gozitan primary schools. It consists mainly of a questionnaire which was sent to the teachers of years three, four, five and six of the Gozitan primary schools. This questionnaire was sent out prior to the new changes to the curriculum, so it is an evaluation of the old curriculum. In the thesis Social Studies is examined in a deeper perspective and conclusions are drawn out. The differences between Social Studies in the primary and the secondary are explored. Further on it is the turn of the aims of the Social Studies syllabus to be explored. A little onwards it is the turn of the subjects composing Social Studies to be investigated. These are History, Civics and Geography. Further on it is the turn of the pilot questionnaire to be given a closer look, afterwards the questionnaire is examined in detail. Each question is commented upon and a graph of the results is shown. Finally there is the discussion and the conclusion. This attempts to draw out any lessons to be learnt from the results. This thesis attempts to describe the situation at a given point in time. That is when the old syllabus was going to be changed, but was still operational.
