Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to analyse whether the use of German Literature in foreign language teaching at the Sixth Form is still to be valued as important. The difference between native and foreign language readers is clearly examined. Even though the latter have to face obvious difficulties when reading literature in a foreign language, it will be shown that dealing with the challenge of different literary genres is essential for the proper learning of a foreign language. In view of various problems, which foreign language teachers have to face today, methods from the Reception Theory of Literature (' 'Rezeptionsasthetik' '), how the teacher should choose texts and facilitate their access for students will be discussed.
