Abstract: The aim of this project, carried out at Adelaide Cini, an area secondary school, was to promote autonomous learning among the students. Primarily, the teacher instructed and guided the pupils and then passed on more autonomous orientated tasks. The main resource was television but handouts were also used later on as the project progressed. After thoroughly examining researches in this field carried out by the Council of Europe and other researchers, the project was divided into four stages: a questionnaire, set with the aim to find out students' interests and attitudes towards television; video lessons (treating a news broadcast, a quiz and various adverts); home activities, students were asked to choose any Italian program (similar to those undertaken in class) and give the re_quested information on the handout; keeping a diary on which they had to write linguistic and cultural aspects whilst they watched the program. The questionnaire indicated that television, a source of unlimited information about Italy and the Italian habits, is a resource which is not given its importance in classroom situations. Despite this, students were able to indicate some cultural aspects whilst watching television. This projects followed the same trend of other studies, indicating that autonomy in learning is achieved slowly and through practice.
