Abstract: For a sample of year 5 students (Boys = 248, Girls = 293) the following data were obtained: family size, father's occupation, age, sex and stream. The relation between attainment on the one side and the variables mentioned above, was studied using the t-test, chi-square and ANOVA. A negative correlation was obtained between family size and attainment, whilst a positive correlation was obtained between father's occupational status and the child's educational attainment. No evidence was found of any relation between age and attainment (in the restricted age group studied). The girls' performance in each of the three subjects considered proved to be superior to that of the boys.
