Abstract: This research describes the use of textbooks used here in Malta. The Italian approach was compared with local methods and differences were noted. Schooling in the early years and the initiation to reading was discussed and the different kinds of textbooks the children come across were considered in 3.0. In this chapter I also discussed how the media can help or hinder the proper Italian language acquisition through television. Special notice was taken of the choice of text-books in Malta and these texts were analysed systematically in the second part of the research. I focused my work on eight teaching environments including State schools (Secondary Schools and Junior Lyceums), Private secondary schools, an evening course, and an Italian school in Malta. I gave out 150 questionnaires and this provided me with a vast framework which gave me the possibility of knowing students' preferences in their reading habits and other important data which I illustrated in graphs in order to give a clearer picture of the students' answers. The gathered data helped me to understand the students' points of view and together with the data gathered by a second questionnaire given to the students' teachers, I could match the answers and get a better knowledge of the situation (5.0). The teaching of a second language is widely discussed in 2.0. General observations and conclusions are presented in 6.0. Suggestions are put forward about how Italian textbooks would be more fruitful to Maltese students who are studying Italian as a second language.
