Abstract: This dissertation presents a variety of texts taken from magazines and literary texts. The main aim behind the exercises presented is the comprehension and decodification strategies of reading. The passages presented offer a series of texts which shed light on the Italian way of life. The text themselves are not in any way modified to suit didactic purposes but have been chosen from sources that present children attending the second year of secondary school a vivid picture of Italy which is a stepping stone towards the initiation to pedagogical material. Reading in a second language involves a whole process which leads the students to comprehend a text. This however doesn't involve understanding each word of the text but achieving an overall comprehension of it. The exercises, which are divided into three sections, are all based on the principles of discourse analysis and help the children to become aware of the process leading to reading.
