Abstract: This dissertation is a short study of Shakespearean characters in the tragedies of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth. Although each character is regarded in his/her respective situation, the focus of attention is shifted on the characters' innerselves which are revealed through what they say in their soliloquies. In this way the contrast/relationship which exists between the behaviour of the characters and the inner thoughts and feelings of the same characters is brought to the fore while certain salient characteristics which are shared by the major characters of the four-mentioned tragedies are also highlighted.
