Abstract: The purpose for embarking on the study of multiculturalism as it stands today in schools in Malta, especially the school I teach at, taken as a case study, is because this phenomenon has interested me for a long time. Furthermore during this M. Ed. course I had the opportunity to discuss issues relating to multiculturalism during the lectures. This led me to investigate further how this social event can happen, develop and grow to create a wonderful combination of cultures, striving to achieve equity and social justice within. Since the school I teach at consists of Maltese and international teachers and students it was an obvious choice under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr. Carmel Borg, to carry out investigations as to how the evolvement of diverse cultures can come together to create a common understanding for all parties involved. The intent of this research project aims to create an awareness of the benefits of multicultural education within a diverse society. Through the celebration of each others' differences can we establish a colourful culture which can be appreciated by all. Taking time to exchange ideas, customs, traditions, languages, religions and lifestyles amongst other things which can form one's background is a worthwhile exercise, as much can be derived and learnt as a variety and change to the home culture one is used to. This thesis aims at creating an awareness that for this to happen people have to be taught to appreciate each others' cultures from a young age, as students, while still at school. At the same time values of equity, tolerance and vi acceptance should accompany the exposure to other cultures in order to equip the individual with the necessary skills for coping when encountering a "different other". Multiculturalism should be fostered especially in the context of education in schools and within the classroom. As a policy on the curriculum this exchange of cultures should promote and accept diversity in all aspects. In our school we are fortunate enough to have a mixture of cultures within the school population, as this is enhanced by the presence of international teachers and students. Although there is a healthy atmosphere of tolerance and a harmonious environment at school, some form of discrimination exists as prejudice and intolerance are felt towards the minority. I feel the need to promote a programme aiming at social justice, equal rights and tolerance for all as part of the syllabus followed during a student's school years. The influence of such achievements in the light of progress as people mix and integrate together is an actual reality we live today. This reality is a privilege we experience within our schools as students acquire their education. We must seize the opportunity of training the students to be open to different opinions and attitudes and make the best out of the multicultural environment they already live in at school and outside.
